People inhabiting the three stuctures and using the furnishings.

more on structure one
more on structure two
more on structure three
Drawing from the utopian philosophy of Herbert Marcuse, 20th century utopian visionaries, and the enviromentalism of contemporary sustainable designers, I began with the idea that utopia can never be reached, only approached. My project attempted to design and build as many structures as possible during the week using primarily waste and ubiquitous materials of our culture. Beyond the research phase, I was put in the paradoxical position of planning for spontaneity. The collection of materials would require resourcefulness and luck leading up to the project's date. I was able to collect paper tubes, of various dimensions from print shops and fabric stores, as well as cardboard, shredded paper, pvc pipes, plastic shopping bags, fabric, blue tarps, etc. Initially, I had hoped to build a structure a day, as well as some furnishings, but finished the week with three completed structures and a small variety of seatings. (The image to the left shows me completing a bench/bed out of recycled fabric strapped to a sheet of plywood.) I would like to thank the individuals, ranging from students, families, and general public, who lent their time, ideas and inspirations to this project.
