WRFR
"radio free radio"

The basement studio
putting the underground back in 'underground radio'
documentation of WRFR's first on-air broadcast
WRFR began broadcasting at 3:30pm on June 24th, 2003, playing a looped CD of various types of music and an informational promo detailing the purpose of the project, an open invite to the community, and contact info.
Besides the creation of promotional material, much work went into the aquiring of broadcast equipment and the building of antennas, in addition assembling the motley collection of record, tape and CD players, as well as mixers, microphones, and all the things that make an upstart station. Throughout the entire project, quality conrol was also a constant issue, improving broadcast transmission and determining the optimal frequency. WRFR was originally intended to broadcast up to one and a half miles, the range a bee will travel to collect pollen and information.Boston was determined to be a difficult broadcast area due to a saturated FM market. WRFR fluctuated between 87.5 and the low 90's at the lower end of the dial, with regular frequency checks. This basically consisted of me walking around the neighborhood wih a digital walkman and a clipboard, noting the content and strengths of all the call numbers.
